Equanimity is a state of being in which the mind and emotions are calm, stable and objective, even when under duress. It is an attitude of openness and acceptance without any wish for anything to be different than it is, and without clinging to pleasurable experiences or having aversion to unpleasant ones. Equanimity arises out of the understanding of the interconnectedness of everything, and the transient nature of all things.

Every event in life has two sides to it; something goes one way, then it goes the other. Daily life is full of happenings which make us happy or make us sad. As a practice, it is beneficial to notice when something makes you very happy, or very sad, and bring to mind the adage: “This too shall pass.” For indeed, both the enjoyable and the sorrowful moments of life do pass. Peace is in the acceptance of this, and the ability to stay in a calm abiding state through it all.
